Topic: The Present Simple Tense

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to understand and use the present simple tense correctly in writing and speech.

Materials

• Whiteboard and markers
• Examples of sentences in the present simple tense
• Handouts with practice sentences

Warm-up

• Ask students if they can recall what the present tense is and what it is used for.
• Write the following sentences on the board:
• I go to school every day.
• She sings in a band.
• They play soccer on weekends.
• Ask students to correct any errors they find in the sentences.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that the present simple tense is used to talk about habitual or ongoing actions or states. This includes actions that happen every day, actions that continue over a period of time, and actions that are always true.
• Give examples of each type of action, using the present simple tense.
• Use the present simple tense to write two or three more sentences on the board. Ask students to correct any errors they find.

Guided Practice

• Give students a few more sentences written in the present simple tense and ask them to identify the type of action or state being described.
• Have students work in pairs to correct any errors they find.

Independent Practice

• Have students create their own sentences using the present simple tense and share them with the class.
• Encourage students to use words and phrases they have learned to help them create their sentences.

Closure

• Review the present simple tense and its uses.
• Have students share one thing they learned about the present simple tense during the lesson.

Assessment

• Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their use of the present simple tense.
• Collect and review the posters created during the independent practice activity to assess student understanding of the present simple tense.
