Topic: Understanding mood and setting within paintings

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify the mood and setting within a painting and explain their reasoning.

Materials

• Picture of a painting
• Pencils and paper for sketching and note-taking

Warm-up

• Ask students to close their eyes and visualize a picture in their head. Ask them to describe the scene to the class, including any details they notice.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the painting "Summer Evening" by Edward Hopper to the class. Ask students to describe what they see in the painting.
• As a class, discuss the mood and setting of the painting. How does the artist use color, line, and composition to create this mood and setting?
• Using the activity handouts, have students practice identifying different moods and settings in art works and describing how the artist uses visual elements to create them.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of art works to review and discuss.
