Topic: Skim and scan reading strategies

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify, understand and analyse skim and scan reading strategies.

Materials

• Text materials for skimming and scanning
• Handouts with examples of skimming and scanning techniques

Warm-up

• Ask students to name some strategies they use to understand text better when reading.
• Write their responses on the board and discuss as a class.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of skim and scan reading and explain that it is a way to read quickly to get an overview of a text and then to focus in on specific parts of interest.
• Use examples from the textbook or other texts to demonstrate how to skim and scan.
• Demonstrate how to skim by scanning the text quickly, looking for headings, subheadings, and key words.
• Demonstrate how to scan by focusing in on specific parts of interest, such as a specific paragraph or section of the text.

Guided Practice

• Show students a text and ask them to skim and scan it, identifying specific sections or ideas that are of interest to them.
• As a class, discuss the strategies used to skim and scan and how they helped students to focus in on specific sections of interest.

Independent Practice

• Give students a variety of texts to skim and scan, including both fiction and non-fiction texts.
• Encourage students to use the strategies they learned during guided practice to focus in on specific sections or ideas of interest to them.

Closure

• Have students share their efforts with the class and discuss any interesting insights or discoveries they made while skimming and scanning.
• Review the importance of skimming and scanning as a reading strategy and discuss any situations where it might be particularly useful.

Assessment

• Observe students during the group skimming and scanning activity and provide feedback on their use of the strategy and their ability to identify and understand the information in the paragraphs.
• Have students complete a written assessment that includes a passage to be read and three questions about the passage, one for each strategy. -Evaluation
• Observe students during a independent skimming and scanning activity and provide feedback on their use of the strategy and their ability to identify and understand the information in the paragraphs.
• Collect and review students written responses from the independent skimming and scanning activity to assess their understanding and application of the skimming and scanning reading strategies.
