Topic: Read a book entitled Remembering September 11

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to understand the events of September 11 and its significance in American history.

Materials

• Textbook or reading materials on September 11
• Writing materials (pen and paper)

Warm-up

• Ask students to raise their hands if they know what September 11 is.
• Discuss with students what they know about September 11.
• Ask students if they have any relatives or friends who have personally experienced the events of September 11.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the book Remembering September 11 to the students.
• Explain that the book is a collection of firsthand accounts of the events of September 11, told by survivors and witnesses.
• Ask students to open the book to the first chapter and begin reading.
• As students read, stop them at various points to discuss their understanding of the events described in the text.
• Encourage students to ask questions and make comments as they read.

Guided Practice

• After students have finished reading the first chapter of the book, ask them to work in pairs to discuss what they have read.
• Have each pair share their thoughts with the class and ask for clarification if needed.
• Continue with the remaining chapters of the book in the same manner.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose one of the events described in the book to research more in depth.
• Students can use a computer or other resources available to them to find information about their chosen event.
• Have students create a presentation or report about their findings.
• Have students present their projects to the class.

Closure

• Have students discuss the importance of remembering the September 11 attacks.
• Ask students to reflect on what they learned about the September 11 attacks and how it affects them today.

Assessment

• Observe students during the independent practice session and provide feedback on their presentations.
• Have students take a quiz to assess their understanding of the September 11 attacks and their effect on the world today.
