Topic: Rhyming Poetry

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to construct a three stanza poem that rhymes about a object or person that is familiar to them.

Materials

  • Word document or sheet of paper for each student
  • Examples of rhyming poems (optional)

Warm-up

  • Have students get in small groups and think of a object or person that is familiar to them.
  • Then, have each group share their idea and write it on the board.
  • As a class, create a list of all the ideas on the board.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of rhyming poetry and explain that rhymes are when words end with the same sound.
  • Using the example of "cat," explain that the words "cat" and "hat" are a rhyme because they end with the same sound (at).
  • Explain that the purpose of rhyming poetry is to create a pattern or rhythm when reading the poem aloud.
  • Model how to construct a three stanza poem by introducing the three parts of a poem: the introduction, body, and conclusion.
  • Use the brainstormed ideas from the warm-up to create a rhyming poem about the object or person using the three stanza structure.
  • As an example, create a rhyming poem about a cat using the three stanza structure.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a piece of paper and a writing utensil.
  • Have the groups brainstorm ideas for a rhyming poem about a object or person using the three stanza structure.
