Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to use a graphic organizer to organize their thoughts and ideas about the tragic events of September 11, 2001 and its aftermath.

Materials

  • Graphic organizer template ([insert link to template here])
  • Copies of the September 11th timeline ([insert link to timeline here])
  • Pen or pencil

Warm-up

  • Begin the lesson by asking students if they remember where they were and what they were doing on September 11, 2001.
  • Encourage students to share their memories and listen to their peers' experiences.
  • Ask students if they know what happened on September 11, 2001 and its aftermath.
  • Encourage students to share their knowledge and listen to their peers' answers.

Direct Instruction

  • Show students the graphic organizer and explain that it is a tool that can be used to organize and remember information.
  • Explain that the graphic organizer has six columns: date, event, location, cause, effect, and response.
  • Ask students to brainstorm key events and information related to September 11, 2001 and its aftermath. Have them write their ideas in the corresponding columns of the graphic organizer.
  • As students share their ideas, encourage them to make connections and think critically about the events and their consequences.
  • Once students have finished brainstorming, review the events and their connections in the graphic organizer.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in small groups to fill in the missing information in the six columns of the graphic organizer.
  • As a class, review the completed graphic organizer and discuss any insights or questions that students have about the events and their consequences.
  • Encourage students to use the information in the graphic organizer when writing a paragraph about September 11, 2001.
