Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

• worksheets with present perfect tense exercises
• pen or pencil
• paper

Warm-up

• Ask students to think of a recent event or something they have done recently.
• Have them share their event or activity with the class.
• Ask the class if they can identify when the event or activity happened (e.g. yesterday, last week, last summer).
• Explain that the tense they used (e.g. yesterday, last week, last summer) is called the

past perfect tense.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that the present perfect tense is used to talk about an event or activity that started in the

past and continues up to the present time.

• Provide the following examples: I have lived in Toronto for 10 years. We have been working on this project for 3 months.
• Ask students to give more examples of their own using the present perfect tense.

Guided Practice

• Divide students into pairs and provide each pair with a set of flashcards featuring present perfect tense

constructions.

• Have students take turns showing a flashcard to their partner and providing a correct response using the

present perfect tense.

• Encourage students to provide explanations for their responses as needed.

Independent Practice

• Provide students with a worksheet featuring multiple present perfect tense constructions.
• Have students complete the worksheet by identifying and writing correct present perfect tense

constructions.

• Encourage students to check their work and correct any errors.

Closure

• Review the present perfect tense and its uses with the class.
• Ask students to share one thing they learned about present perfect tense today.

Assessment

• Collect and review their work to assess their understanding of present perfect tense.
