Topic: Poetry

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and analyze the techniques used by poets to create mood and express ideas in their poems.

Materials

• Selection of poems for class discussion (can be chosen from provided materials or selected from students' personal reading)
• Handouts with examples of poetic techniques
• Access to computers or tablets for research and internet access for supplementary materials

Warm-up

• Begin the lesson by asking students to think about what poetry is and what they think it is used for. Allow a few minutes for them to share their ideas with the class.
• Next, show the class a video or reading a poem aloud to help them understand the different ways poets can express themselves through poetry.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of evaluating poetry, explaining that this means considering the qualities, features, and elements of a poem and judging its quality.
• Discuss the different types of evaluation that can be made about poetry, such as judging its effectiveness, impact, and quality.
• Provide examples of different types of poetry and discuss how they can be evaluated.

Guided Practice

• Divide students into small groups and provide each group with a copy of a poem.
• Have students work together to evaluate the poem, discussing its qualities, features, and elements and making a judgement about its quality.
• Have each group share their evaluation with the class and discuss their reasoning.

Independent Practice

• Give students a list of poems and have them work individually or in small groups to evaluate each poem.
• Have students write a short paragraph explaining their evaluation of each poem and supporting their reasoning with reference to the poem's qualities, features, and elements.

Closure

• Review the key concepts of text evaluation and how to support one's reasoning with reference to the text and other sources.
• Ask students to share their evaluations of the poems and explain their reasoning.

Assessment

• Observe students during the guided practice and independent practice activities to assess their understanding of the concept of text evaluation and their ability to support their reasoning with reference to the text and other sources.
• Collect and grade the written evaluations for understanding and accuracy.
