Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify different types of natural disasters and describe their characteristics and impacts.

Materials

• Chart with pictures or descriptions of different types of natural disasters (e.g. hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, etc.)
• Pencils and paper for each student

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever experienced a natural disaster or know someone who has.
• Discuss their experiences and what they learned from them.

Direct Instruction

• Distribute the handouts with definitions and examples of natural disasters.
• Review the materials as a class, clarifying any misconceptions.
• Ask students to brainstorm additional natural disasters that are not on the list.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and have them work together to create a list of natural disasters that could potentially occur in their region.
• Have each group present their list to the class and discuss why each event could be considered a natural disaster.

Independent Practice

• Provide each student with a blank map of the world and have them label any regions that are known to experience natural disasters.
• Have students work in small groups to research and create a poster about a specific natural disaster that occurs in one of the regions on their map.
• Have each group present their poster to the class and discuss the impact that the natural disaster has had on the region.

Closure

• Review the different types of natural disasters that were discussed in the lesson.
• Ask students to share something they learned about natural disasters that they found interesting or surprising.

Assessment

• Observe students during the group activity and independent practice to assess their understanding of natural disasters and their impacts on communities.
• Collect and review the projects created during the independent practice to assess students' ability to research and present information about a specific natural disaster.
