Topic: greetings in different cultures

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and use appropriate greetings in different cultures.

Materials

  • Posters with examples of greetings from different cultures (e.g. "hello" in English, "name?" in Korean, "nihongo ni arigatou gozaimasu" in Japanese)
  • Pencils and paper for each student

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they know how to greet people in different languages.
  • Have a few students share examples of greetings they know in different languages.

Direct Instruction

  • Show pictures or videos of different greetings from different cultures.
  • Ask students if they can guess what each greeting means.
  • Explain that greetings are different depending on where you are in the world.
  • Ask students if they can think of any other greetings they know in different languages.

Guided Practice

  • Review the different greetings that the students learned about.
  • Ask the students to share their favorite greeting and why.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the independent practice activity and give feedback on their use of greetings.
  • Ask the students to reflect on the importance of greetings and the culture or country they come from.
