Topic: Figures of speech

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and define figures of speech, and give examples of each.

Materials

  • List of commonly used figures of speech (e.g. hyperbole, metaphor, simile, etc.)
  • Examples of each figure of speech
  • Pictures or illustrations of the examples

Warm-Up

  • Ask students if they have ever heard of or used a figure of speech before. Ask them to give an example.
  • Discuss how figures of speech are different from everyday speech and writing, and why they are used.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of figures of speech and give examples of each type (e.g. metaphor, simile, oxymoron, etc.).
  • Explain how each type of figure of speech is used to convey a specific emotion or idea.
  • Have students brainstorm additional examples of each type of figure of speech on their own or in small groups.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs or small groups to identify and explain the use of a specific figure of speech in a passage from a book or article.
  • Have each group present their example to the class and discuss the purpose of the figure of speech.

  • Assign a project in which students choose a passage from a book or article and identify and explain the use of multiple figures of speech.

  • Have students share their projects with the class, giving them the opportunity to explain the figurative language they found in their chosen passage and how it affects the meaning of the text.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity to assess their understanding of figurative language and their ability to identify and explain examples in a text.
  • Evaluate the projects created during independent practice to assess students' ability to create a project that demonstrates their understanding of figurative language and its effect on meaning.
