Topic:Expressing Apology

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this activity, students will be able to write a proper apology that expresses remorse, acknowledges the wrongdoing, and seeks to make restitution.

Materials

• Handout with examples of proper apology statements
• Means of writing the statements (e.g. computers, paper, pencils)

Warm-up

• Have students think of a time when they have done something wrong and someone has apologized to them for it.
• Have them share their experience with the class and discuss the elements of a proper apology.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the topic of expressing apology.
• Discuss the importance of apologizing when we have done something wrong.
• Discuss the elements of a proper apology, including expressing remorse, taking responsibility for the actions, and offering a solution or way to make things right.
• Provide examples of proper apology statements.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs or small groups to come up with a proper apology statement for a hypothetical situation.
• Have each group present their apology statement to the class and discuss how well it meets the criteria for a proper apology.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a real situation in which they have wronged someone and write a proper apology statement for that situation.
• Encourage students to use the criteria for a proper apology statement to guide their writing.

Closure

• Have students share their apology statements with the class.
• Discuss as a class what makes a proper apology statement and how it can be used to resolve a conflict.
• Make sure that students understand the importance of apologizing for our mistakes and the positive impact that it can have on resolving conflicts.
