Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify, define, and give examples of figures of speech.

Materials

• Handout with examples of figures of speech (e.g., simile, metaphor, hyperbole, irony, etc.)
• Whiteboard or blackboard and chalk

Warm-up

• Ask students to share an example of a figure of speech they have heard or read recently. Write their examples on the board.
• Discuss the different types of figures of speech and their uses.

Direct Instruction

• Distribute the handout with examples of figures of speech.
• Review the definitions and examples with the class.
• Have students brainstorm additional examples of each figure of speech on the board.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to identify examples of each figure of speech in a passage from a book or magazine.
