Topic: Countries

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and name at least 10 different countries.

Materials

  • List of countries
  • Pencils
  • Paper
  • Writing prompts (optional)

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have ever been abroad or visited another country.
  • Ask them to share their experiences and what they saw and did there.
  • Write down the names of the countries they mention on the board.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of countries and geography.
  • Tell students that there are many countries in the world and that they are divided into different continents.
  • Show a map of the world and point to the different continents.
  • Ask students to name some countries in each continent.
  • Ask students to repeat the names of the countries, writing them down on the board.
  • Explain that the names of countries are written differently in different languages and sometimes they can be hard to pronounce.
  • Show examples of how the names of countries are written in different languages and how to pronounce them correctly.
  • Explain the correct pronunciation of the examples.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups.
  • Give each group a list of countries and have them work together to identify and write down the correct pronunciation of each country.
  • Have each group share their answers with the class and correct any incorrect pronunciations.
  • Assessment
  • Have students practice writing the names of countries on their own, providing assistance as needed.
  • Have students practice reading the names of countries out loud, providing assistance as needed.
  • Make a class chart with the names of the countries and their correct pronunciations.
  • Have students point to the correct country on the map and correctly pronounce its name.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work on a project-based independent practice activity in which they research and create a poster or presentation about a specific country.

Projects may include:

  • Information about the country's population, geography, culture, and landmarks
  • Trading partner and/or overseas territories
  • Local sayings, traditions, and customs

  • Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
  • Glue or tape
  • Hole punch (for attaching to poster board)

Closure

  • Review the key points of the lesson with the students.
  • Ask the students to share their favorite part of the lesson and why.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the guided and independent practice activities to assess their understanding of the material.
  • Collect and review the students' country flags and maps to assess their use of the correct names and spellings.
