Free 7th Grade Conducting An Interview Lesson Plan (English)

Topic: Conducting an Interview

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to plan and conduct an interview with a given individual or group.

Materials

  • Interview questions (provided by the teacher or generated by the students)
  • List of potential interviewees (provided by the teacher or generated by the students)
  • Pen and paper for taking notes

Warm-up

  • Ask the students to brainstorm a list of people they would like to interview.
  • Write their suggestions on the board.
  • Ask the students to explain why they chose those particular individuals.
  • Encourage the students to think about what they would want to know if they were conducting the interview.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of an interview and its purpose: to gain information about a person or topic.
  • Discuss the importance of asking open-ended questions that encourage the interviewee to provide detailed responses.
  • Emphasize the importance of listening actively and using proper technique (e.g. not interrupting, not asking questions that have already been answered).
  • Demonstrate proper interviewing technique, including how to prepare for the interview, how to introduce oneself and the purpose of the interview, how to ask open-ended questions, and how to listen actively.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a specific interviewee (e.g. a classmate, a family member, a teacher).
  • Have each group practice conducting an interview, following the steps outlined in the direct instruction.
  • Have each group share the information they gathered with the class, and discuss the techniques used.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a person to interview, and create a project to demonstrate their interviewing skills. This could be a written report, a presentation, or a video.
  • Encourage students to be creative and think about how they can best engage with their interviewee and draw out relevant information.

Closure

  • Have students share their projects with the class, and discuss the challenges and successes of conducting the interviews.
  • Review the key principles of effective interviewing, and discuss how these can be applied in real-world situations.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the guided practice activity to assess their understanding of the principles of effective interviewing.
  • Evaluate the independent projects for their ability to effectively convey the interviewee's story, and the student's ability to apply the principles of effective interviewing in the chosen topic.
