Topic: Adventure

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will realize new vocabulary related to adventure.

Materials

• Word cards with various words related to adventure (e.g. mountain, climb, explorer, adventure)
• Pictures of different types of adventure (e.g. mountain climbing, exploring ancient ruins, deep sea diving)

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever gone on an adventure before.
• Ask them to share their experience with the class.
• Discuss what makes an adventure an adventure.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the new vocabulary words from the handout.
• Use examples and illustrations to demonstrate the meaning of each word.
• Emphasize the importance of understanding and using the new vocabulary words in context.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups.
• Give each group a copy of the reading passage and have them read it together.
• As they read, have them underline or highlight the words they have learned and use a dictionary to check the definitions if needed.
• After they have finished reading, have them discuss how the new vocabulary words are used in the passage.

Independent Practice

• Have each student choose one of the vocabulary words from the reading passage and write a short paragraph using the word in a context that makes sense in the story.
• Have them share their paragraphs with the class and discuss how the new vocabulary words are used in their writing.

Closure

• Review the new vocabulary words and their definitions.
• Ask the students to share one new thing they learned about the story or how it relates to their own lives.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the independent practice activity and give feedback on their use of vocabulary and their understanding of the story.
