Free 7th Grade Active Voice And Passive Voice Lesson Plan (English)

Topic: Active Voice and Passive Voice

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to understand the difference between active voice and passive voice, and will be able to recognize when each is appropriate in a sentence.

Materials

  • Sentences written in both active voice and passive voice
  • Pencils and paper for each student

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have ever heard of the terms "active voice" and "passive voice." Ask them to explain what each is and how they are different.
  • Show the class a few examples of sentences written in active voice and passive voice and ask them to point out the differences.

Direct Instruction

  • Define active voice and passive voice for the class. Active voice is when the subject of a sentence does the action, while passive voice is when the subject is being acted upon.
  • Show more examples of active voice and passive voice and have the class discuss the differences. Ask questions such as:
  • How is the verb changed in passive voice?
  • What happens to the subject and/or object in passive voice?
  • What effect does passive voice have on the tone of the sentence?

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups. Give each group one of the examples from the direct instruction and have them identify the voice of the sentence.
  • Have each group present their answer and explain their reasoning to the class.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a sheet of paper with several examples of active voice and passive voice sentences.
  • Have the students identify the voice of each sentence and write the corresponding letter (A for active voice, P for passive voice) next to each sentence.

Closure

  • Review the difference between active voice and passive voice.
  • Ask the students to share their findings from the independent practice activity.
  • Remind the students of the importance of using active voice instead of passive voice, as it makes the sentence more direct and emphasizes the action more.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the sorting activity and give feedback on their ability to recognize active and passive voice.
  • Collect the students' written work and assess them for their understanding of active voice and passive voice and their ability to correctly use them in a sentence.
