7th Grade Still Life Lesson Plan

Topic: Still Life

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to create a still life drawing using a variety of different objects.

Materials

  • A variety of different objects such as fruit, flowers, or other small objects
  • Drawing paper
  • Pencils (typically HB or B)
  • Eraser
  • Tape or glue (optional)

Warm-up

  • Have students take a few minutes to observe the objects that will be used for the still life. Ask them to write down any observations or ideas they have about the objects and how they might be used in a still life drawing.
  • Then, have students take a few minutes to explore some still life drawings online or in a art

book. Ask them to look for ways that the artists used the objects in their still life drawings, and how the objects helped create a sense of depth or realism in the drawing.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of a still life drawing, and explain that it is a drawing of a collection of

objects that are arranged and positioned to create a sense of depth and realism.

  • Review the technique of shading, and discuss how it can be used to create the illusion of depth in a still life drawing.
  • Show the students some examples of still life drawings and have them discuss their observations and ideas about the use of objects and the application of shading in the drawings.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the students into small groups and give each group a set of objects to use for their still life drawing.
  • Have the students arrange and position the objects in a way that creates a sense of depth and realism, and then have them begin to sketch their drawings using pencil or charcoal.
  • As the students are working, circulate and provide guidance and support as needed.

Independent Practice

  • Once the students have completed their rough sketches, have them rub out their pencil marks and begin to polish their drawings using charcoal or another media of their choice.
  • Encourage the students to consider the lighting and the shadows created by the objects in their still life as they polish their drawings.

Closure

  • Review the techniques and principles that were covered during the lesson, including value, line, shading, and perspective.
  • Have the students share their still life drawings with the class and discuss the techniques and principles that they used in their drawings.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the guided practice and independent practice portions of the lesson to assess their understanding of the techniques and principles covered.
  • Collect and review the students' still life drawings to assess their ability to apply the techniques and principles in their own drawings.
