Media Arts

Topic: media arts

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand the various forms of media arts and how they are created.
  • Students will be able to identify the different types of media arts and use them as inspiration to create their own stop motion piece.

Materials

  • Clay
  • Cartoon drawings or images
  • Grafic novel images or screens
  • Stop motion software (e.g. Simple Stop Motion)
  • Computer or laptop
  • Camera (optional)

Warm-up

  • Show the students a sample of a stop motion animation and ask them to describe what they see. Then, ask them to describe how the animation was created.
  • Next, show the students some examples of different media arts such as a cartoon or a grafic novel and ask them to describe what they see. Then, ask them to explain how the media arts were created.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of stop motion animation and explain that it is a technique where an object is moved a tiny bit at a time to create the illusion of movement.
  • Explain that media arts can be used as inspiration for creating stop motion animations.
  • Show the students some examples of stop motion animations and ask them to describe what they see. Then, ask them to describe how the animation was created by using the media arts as inspiration.

Guided Practice:

  • Divide the students into small groups and give each group a set of materials to work with (e.g. clay, construction paper, markers, etc.).
  • Have the students use the media arts they have chosen as inspiration to create a storyboard for their stop motion animation. This can be done through drawing, writing, or any other form of storytelling that the students are comfortable with.
  • Have the students use their storyboard as a guide to create their stop motion animation using the provided materials.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work individually or in small groups to create their stop motion animation.
  • Encourage the students to use their creativity and imagination to come up with their own story and characters.

Closure

  • Have the students share their animations with the class.
  • Ask the students to reflect on the project and what they learned about using different forms of media arts as inspiration for their own stop motion animation.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the independent practice and provide feedback on their use of media arts in their stop motion animation.
  • Evaluate the students' stop motion animations and provide feedback on their understanding of using different forms of media arts as inspiration for their own stop motion animation.
