  • Handouts with definitions and examples of the elements of arts (e.g. line, shape, color, texture, form, space)

  • After a few minutes, ask for volunteers to share their observations with the class.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of the five elements of art (color, line, shape, texture, and space) and explain how they contribute to the overall effect of a work of art.
  • Using the examples from the warm-up, demonstrate how each element can be used in a work of art and how they work together to create a harmonious whole.
  • Ask students to pay attention to the elements in the works that are presented and try to identify how they contribute to the overall effect of the work.

Guided Practice

  • Give students time to work on their own to create a work of art that incorporates at least three of the elements of art.
  • Walk around the room and assist students as needed, encouraging them to think about how they can use the elements of art to create a harmonious whole.
  • After a short period of time, invite students to present their works to the class and discuss how they used the elements of art to create their piece.

Independent Practice

  • For the independent practice portion of the lesson, have students work in small groups to create a piece of art that incorporates all five of the elements of art.
  • Encourage students to work cooperatively and exchange ideas as they plan and create their piece, paying attention to how they can work together to create a harmonious whole.
  • After a short period of time, invite students to present their works to the class and discuss how they used the elements of art to create their piece.

Closure:

  • Review the elements of art as a class and discuss how they were used in the students' projects.
  • Ask students to reflect on the importance of the elements of art in creating great works of art and how understanding them can help them to create their own works that are well-balanced and harmonious.

Assessment:
