Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the elements of art and how they are used to create art.

Materials

  • Images of art that demonstrate the use of the elements of art (line, shape, texture, color, space, and form)
  • Note cards with the words "line," "shape," "texture," "color," "space," and "form" written on them

Warm-up

  • Show the students the images of art and ask them to describe what they see. Encourage them to use descriptive words such as "curvy," "pointy," "smooth," "bumpy," "dark," and "light."
  • As a class, brainstorm a list of words that could be used to describe art and its elements.

Direct Instruction

  • Review the six elements of art (line, shape, color, texture, composition, and expression) and give examples of each.
  • Demonstrate how to use the elements of art to create art, using the warm-up images as a guide.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to create a piece of art that uses the six elements of art. Provide guidance and support as needed.

Independent Practice

  • Assign a project that requires students to create a piece of art using the six elements of art. This could be a mural, a collage, or another project of the students' choosing.

Closure:

  • Have students share their completed projects with the class and discuss how they used the elements of art in their work.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during the independent practice and give feedback on their use of the elements of art in their work.
  • Collect and review the completed projects to assess student understanding of the elements of art and their ability to use them in creating art.
