Topic: Creating Music Clips using Visual Images

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to create a music clip using visual images to enhance the soundtrack.

Materials

• Computer with internet connection
• Music file (can be downloaded from website like YouTube or SoundCloud)
• Images (can be downloaded from website like Pixabay)
• Microsoft PowerPoint or similar presentation software

Warm-up

• Ask students to listen to the music file and observe the images in the background.
• Ask students to share their observations and how the images complement the music.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of music video and its purpose of enhancing the listening experience by pairing visuals with sound.
• Explain the different roles and responsibilities of the director, editor, and composer in creating a music video.
• Show examples of music videos and have students identify the roles of each person in the making of the video.

Guided Practice

• Divide students into small groups and provide them with a choice of soundtracks
• Have them brainstorm ideas for images that would go well with their chosen soundtrack
• Have each group choose roles with which to create their own video
• Have the editor among the group cut and arrange the images and the soundtrack together into a cohesive and engaging music video.

Independent Practice

• Assign each student a specific visual image or set of images and have them create a music clip using a video editing program.
• Encourage students to be creative and inventive with their soundtracks, and to consider the mood and tone of the images when deciding what type of music to use.

Closure

• Have students share their music clips with the class and discuss the relationship between the visuals and the soundtracks.
• Ask students to reflect on the process of creating the music clips and discuss what they learned about combining visuals and sound.

Assessment

• Observe students as they work to create a music clip and provide feedback on their use of visuals and sound.
• Collect and review the music clips that students create to assess their understanding of the process of combining visuals and sound.
