Topic: present simple in narration

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to use the present simple in narration to describe a scene or event in their writing.

Materials

• Copies of the sentence stems "When I __, I __." and "It is a __ day. " for each student
• A copy of the narrative passage "A Sunny Day" for each student
• Writing paper and pen or pencils for each student

Warm-up

• Ask students to close their eyes and imagine a sunny day. Ask them to describe in their own words what a sunny day looks like, sounds like, and feels like.
• Next, ask students to open their eyes and share their descriptions with the class. Encourage them to use descriptive details and verbs.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of present simple tense and its uses in narration.
• Use the handouts to demonstrate the formation of present simple verbs.
• Go over some common verbs and their meanings in present simple.
• Model how to use present simple in narration by writing a short descriptive paragraph about a familiar object or place.

Guided Practice

• Divide the students into small groups and give each group a common object or place.
• Have the students use the present simple to write a descriptive paragraph about the object or place.
