Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify examples of innovation in their daily lives and in the world around them.
  • Students will be able to create a picture book with a theme of innovation that will be suitable for young children.

Materials

  • Analytical thinking skills

  • Pencils
  • Paper
  • Collage materials (e.g. construction paper, scissors, glue)
  • Picture research materials (e.g. magazines, internet)

Warm-up

  • Discuss the definition of innovation as a class.

-Ask students to think about a time when they were inspired to do something new or different. Write their answers on the board.

  • Ask students to share their answers with a partner and discuss why the activity was innovative.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of innovation and its importance.
  • Discuss the different types of innovation, such as technological, economic, and social.
  • Show examples of picture books with themes of innovation. ##Direct Instruction
  • Provide students with the picture book writing guidelines (see Appendix A for sample guidelines).
  • Discuss the importance of theme and how it can be used to inspire creativity in writing.
  • Introduce the techniques for drawing and illustrating using pencils and pens.

Guided Practice

  • Divide students into small groups and give each group a copy of the picture book writing guidelines and a copy of the example picture books with themes of innovation.
  • Have each group brainstorm ideas for a picture book that involves that theme.
  • Assist students as needed in drafting their stories and creating rough sketches of their illustrations.

Independent Practice

  • For the last 8 lessons, students work independently on their picture books.
  • Students write and illustrate their stories and use technology (e.g. -Adobe Creative Cloud) to create a printable version of their picture books.
  • Students present their picture books to the class and explain the theme of their books to the young children.

Closure

  • Summarize the key points of the class and discuss why creating a picture book is a great way to express your ideas and creativity.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice to assess their understanding of the material covered in the 8 lessons.
  • Collect and review students' completed picture books for overall understanding of the material and ability to express their ideas and creativity through the chosen theme of innovation.
