      2. Students will be able to explain how different geographical features influence the way people live in different parts of the world.

        National Standards:

        • National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Standard 1: Culture
        • NCSS Standard 6: Power, Authority, and Governance

        Materials:

        • World map
        • Pictures of different geographical features
        • Books about different countries and their geography
        • Construction paper
        • Markers
        • Glue

        Warm-Up:

Ask students: "What do you know about maps? How do you think geography affects the way people live in different parts of the world?"

            Direct Instruction:

Show students a world map and point out different geographical features such as mountains, rivers, and oceans. Discuss how these features can impact the way people live in different regions. Use pictures and books to help students visualize these concepts.

                Guided Practice:

Active learning strategy: Create a hands-on activity where students use construction paper and markers to create their own map with geographical features. Guide students on how to draw mountains, rivers, and oceans on their maps. Encourage students to think about how these features may impact the way people live in that area.

                    Independent Practice:

Project-based activity: Have students choose a country and create a poster that showcases the geographical features of that country and how it affects the way people live there. Encourage students to be creative and use pictures and drawings to illustrate their points.

                        Closure:

Closure activity: Have students share their posters with the class and explain how the geographical features of their chosen country influence the way people live there.

                            Assessment:

Assess students based on their participation in class discussions, their ability to identify geographical features on a map, and the creativity and thoughtfulness of their project-based activity.

Differentiation for students with special needs:

                                • Provide visuals and hands-on materials for students who may have trouble understanding concepts through verbal instruction.
                                • Offer extra support and guidance during the guided practice activity for students who may struggle with fine motor skills.
                                • Allow students with special needs to choose a simpler project-based activity that still meets the objectives of the lesson.
