Materials

  • Picture cards depicting various types of diversity (e.g. ethnic, gender, age, physical ability)
  • Word cards with different words associated with discrimination (e.g. prejudice, stereotype, bigotry)
  • Chart paper and markers

Warm-up

  • Have students form small groups and give each group a set of word cards. Ask them to quickly sort the cards into two piles based on the words on the cards. Then, have each group come up with a example of discrimination that relates to the words on their cards.

Direct Instruction

  • Begin by asking the students what they think the word "discrimination" means. Write their responses on the board.
  • Next, show the students the pictures of people from different ethnic and religious backgrounds. Ask them to name the people in the pictures and guess where they are from.
  • Then, ask the students to think about the different types of diversity that exist in our world. Encourage them to come up with as many examples as they can. Write their ideas on the board.
  • Next, show the students the word cards and have them repeat the words out loud. Ask them to think about how these words can lead to discrimination and how they can be harmful to people.
  • Finally, have the students take a few minutes to reflect on the importance of respecting and accepting diversity in our world.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the students into small groups and have them work together to create a collage of images and words that show diversity in our world.
  • As a class, discuss the different images and words the students chose and why they think they are important.
  • Assist the students in creating a list of things they can do to show respect and acceptance towards diversity in our world.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students create a poster or presentation on one way they can show respect and acceptance towards diversity in our world.
  • Encourage the students to use the list they created during the guided practice as inspiration for their project.

Closure
