Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to describe the different methods of organic waste disposal and the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

Materials

  • A variety of organic waste (e.g. vegetable scraps, fruit peelings, tea bags, etc.)
  • Assorted containers for waste disposal (e.g. compost bin, landfill, incinerator, etc.)
  • Handouts with information about different methods of organic waste disposal

Warm-up

  • Ask students what they know about organic waste disposal and waste in general. Write down their responses on the board.
  • Discuss the importance of proper waste disposal and the negative effects of waste pollution.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of organic waste and explain why it must be separated from other waste.
  • Show students examples of organic waste, such as food scraps, fruit peels, and vegetable scraps.
  • Discuss the different methods of organic waste disposal, such as composting, anaerobic digestion, and composting.
  • Explain the benefits of each method and the conditions necessary for each to be successful.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a container and a set of labeled containers for the different methods of organic waste disposal.
  • Have the students observe their own kitchen waste for one day and collect all of the organic waste they can find.
  • Have each group sort their waste into the appropriate containers.
  • Have students discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each method and explain why they chose to sort their waste the way they did.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose one of the methods of organic waste disposal to research in more detail.
  • Have students create a poster or presentation to teach their classmates about their chosen method and how to properly implement it in the home.
  • Encourage students to be creative and include fun and engaging visuals in their presentations.

Closure

  • Have each group present their poster or presentation to the class.
  • Ask students to reflect on what they have learned about organic waste disposal and how they can implement it in the home.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during the sorting and composting activities to assess their understanding of the concepts.
  • Evaluate the posters or presentations created by the groups to assess their understanding of the topic.
