Topic: Sorting materials into groups

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and classify natural and man made materials.

Materials

• A variety of natural and man made materials such as rocks, metallic objects, fabrics, plastics, and so on.

Warm-up

• Ask students to raise their hand if they can name any natural materials. Write down their answers on the board.
• Ask students to raise their hand if they can name any man made materials. Write down their answers on the board.
• Ask students to explain how they know the materials are natural or man made.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of natural and man made materials. Explain that natural materials are materials that are found in nature, while man made materials are materials that are made by humans.
• Show students examples of natural and man made materials and have them sort them into separate groups.

Guided Practice

• Show students more examples of natural and man made materials and have them sort them into separate groups.
• As they are sorting, walk around and provide support and guidance as needed.

Independent Practice

• Give students a worksheet with a variety of natural and man made materials listed.
• Have them individually choose the correct group for each material and color in the correct bubble.
• Encourage students to discuss and help each other if needed.

Closure

• Review the main points of the lesson, namely the characteristics of natural and man made materials.
• Ask students to share something they learned or found interesting about the different materials.

Assessment

• Observe students during the sorting and independent practice activities to assess their understanding of the sorting criteria and their ability to apply them.
• Collect and review the sorted lists to assess students' ability to classify natural and man made materials.
• Administer a quiz to assess students' knowledge of the characteristics of natural and man made materials.
