Topic: Clay Pebbles and Aquaponics

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will understand the relationship between geology, clay pebbles, and Aquaponics.

Materials

• Clay pebbles
• Aquaponics system or setup
• Chart paper and markers

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have heard of Aquaponics.
• Ask them to explain what Aquaponics is and how it works.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of Aquaponics and explain how it works.
• Explain how the process of Aquaponics relies on the interaction between fish, plants, and bacteria.
• Discuss the importance of geology and clay pebbles in the creation of Aquaponics systems.
• Show pictures or videos of Aquaponics systems and discuss the role of clay pebbles in these systems.

Guided Practice

• Provide each student with a bag of clay pebbles and have them observe the characteristics of the clay pebbles.
• Ask the students to think about how the properties of the clay pebbles (e.g. water filtering properties, ability to retain nutrients) contribute to the functioning of an Aquaponics system.
• Have the students place the clay pebbles in a container and discuss how the characteristics of the clay pebbles can be used to create an Aquaponics system.

Independent Practice

• Have the students work in pairs to create an Aquaponics system using clay pebbles.
