Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and classify different types of angles based on their properties, including acute, right, and obtuse angles.

Materials

• Whiteboard and markers
• Handouts with examples of different types of angles

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever heard of angles before. What do they think angles are?
• Show students a few examples of different types of angles and ask them to classify them based on their properties.

Direct Instruction

• Define the term "angle" and explain that it refers to the angle formed by two rays that intersect at a common point.
• Show students more examples of different types of angles and explain the different properties that distinguish them. For example, acute angles have angles less than 90°, obtuse angles have angles greater than 90° but less than 180°, and right angles have angles of exactly 90°.
• Explain that the measure of an angle is determined by the number of degrees it contains. One full rotation is equivalent to 360 degrees, and so an angle of 90° contains 180 degrees.
• Review the classification of angles based on acute, obtuse, and right, and discuss the characteristics that define each type.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to classify the angles in a set of examples as acute, obtuse, or right.
• Circle the label for each angle on the worksheet and have students use the labeled side of a compass to draw the exact measure of each angle.
• Review the answers as a class and discuss any questions or misconceptions.

Independent Practice

• Provide students with additional examples of angles to classify and have them complete the worksheet independently.

Closure

• Review the different types of angles and their definitions.
• Ask students to summarize what they have learned about angles and how they are used in our daily lives.

Assessment

• Observe students during independent practice to see if they are able to create a solid, right angle shape.
• Evaluate students' work for the lesson, looking for understanding and depth of understanding.
• Ask students to explain their angles and the closure principle in their own words.
