Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to read and interpret water and electric meters.

Materials

• Water and electric meters
• Handouts with examples of water and electric meters
• Pencils and paper for taking notes

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever seen a water or electric meter before.
• Ask them to describe what the meter looks like and what information is on it.
• Write their responses on the board.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that water and electric meters are devices that measure the amount of water or electricity that is used by a household or business.
• Show students the different parts of a water or electric meter, including the dial, the numbers, and the reset button.
• Explain how to read a water or electric meter, including how to determine the current reading and how to calculate the usage over a specific period of time.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to practice reading and interpreting water and electric meters.
• Have each pair go to a nearby home or business and ask to see the water and electric meters.
• Have students use their skills to read and interpret the meters.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a home or business nearby and go to read the water and electric meters.
• Have students create a report on their chosen location, including a graph or chart of the meter readings and their interpretation of the data.

Closure

• Review the importance of water and electricity and how reading the meters can help conserve these resources.
• Ask students to share what they learned and how they can help contribute to conservation at home.
