Angles Lesson Plan for 5th Grade Students

Topic: Angles

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to measure and draw an angle using a protractor and identify its measure using degree marks.

Materials

  • Protractor
  • Card with illustrations of different angles
  • Pen or pencil

Warm-up

  • Ask students to look at the card with illustrations of different angles and point out the angle that is closest to a right angle. Ask them to explain why this angle is closest to a right angle.
  • Next, ask students to point out the angle that is closest to a straight angle (or a straight line). Ask them to explain why this angle is closest to a straight angle.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to students that an angle is a measure of the relationship between two rays or line segments that meet at a point.
  • Show students the protractor and explain how to use it to measure an angle. Demonstrate how to mark the starting point and the ending point of the angle on the protractor and how to use the scale to find the angle measurement.
  • Explain how to draw an angle using a straight edge and a protractor. Demonstrate how to use the straight edge to draw a line that is at a right angle (or a straight line) and then use the protractor to draw the angle.
  • Have students work with a partner to measure and draw various angles using the protractor and straight edge.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work with a partner to measure and draw various angles using the protractor and straight edge.
  • As a class, discuss the different types of angles that students drew, and discuss how to identify and label each type of angle.
  • Have students work with a partner to classify the angles they drew as acute, obtuse, or straight.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work in small groups to create a "Ways to Create an Angle" project.
  • Students can brainstorm different ways to create an angle and then create a poster or presentation to demonstrate their ideas.
  • Encourage students to be creative and think outside the box.

Closure

  • Review the vocabulary terms for angles (acute, obtuse, and right) and have students give examples of each.
  • Ask students to share their posters or presentations with the class.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice to assess their understanding of the vocabulary terms and their ability to measure and draw angles.
  • Collect and review their posters or presentations to assess their understanding of the procedure for measuring and drawing angles.
