Algebra

Topic:Expressing Missing Number Problems Algebraically Using Number Rods

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to express missing number problems algebraically using number rods.

Materials

  • Number rods (or manipulatives such as counting blocks, blocks, or unifix cubes may be used as a substitute)
  • Worksheets with missing number problems
  • Calculator (optional, but recommended)

Warm-up

  • Review the concept of "making ten" and how to count up to (and beyond) ten using number rods or counting manipulatives.
  • Have students practice identifying where a number is missing from a set of numbers and expressing that number as a sum of two numbers (e.g. given 5, 6, 8, 9, identify where the missing number is and express it as the sum of two numbers: 5 + ? = 10)

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of algebraic expressions, including variables, operations, and parentheses.
  • Use the number rods to model and solve missing number problems, using the algebraic expressions to express the solutions.
  • Use a whiteboard or dry-erase board to model and solve problems, and have students identify and record the algebraic expressions.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to solve missing number problems using the number rods.
  • Have students work in small groups to solve missing number problems using the algebraic expressions.
  • As a class, solve and discuss the solutions.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work on a project-based activity where they must solve a series of missing number problems using both the number rods and the algebraic expressions.
  • Students can work individually or in small groups to complete the activity.

Closure

  • Review the steps for solving missing number problems using the number rods.
  • Ask students to share any challenges they faced and how they were able to overcome them.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the guided practice activity and provide feedback on their use of the number rods to solve missing number problems.
  • Evaluate students' independent practice projects for their use of number rods to solve missing number problems, as well as for their ability to explain their solutions.
