Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

  • Pencils
  • Writing paper
  • Guided writing prompt (optional)

Warm-up

  • Ask students what they know about writing a paragraph.
  • Write their responses on the board.
  • Explain that a paragraph is a group of sentences that are related to each other.

Direct Instruction

  • Ask students to brainstorm ideas for a paragraph about a topic of their choice.
  • As they brainstorm, write their ideas on the board.
  • Once they have finished brainstorming, ask students to choose one idea to use for their paragraph.
  • Ask students to think about what information they need to include in their paragraph about this topic.
  • Write their ideas on the board.
  • As a class, brainstorm words and phrases that can be used to help organize their ideas.
  • Write these on the board as well.
  • Have students work with a partner to draft their paragraph, using the ideas and words on the board as a guide.
  • Model how to use transition words and phrases to help connect their ideas.
  • Have students check their work for spelling and grammar errors.

Guided Practice

  • Give students a different topic and have them work with a partner to draft a new paragraph, using the same steps as in the direct instruction.
  • As a class, go over the paragraphs and discuss how the use of transition words and phrases helped organize the ideas.

Independent Practice

  • For their project, have students choose a topic and write a paragraph about it, using the steps and techniques learned in the lesson.
  • Encourage them to use transition words and phrases to help organize their ideas.

Closure

  • Have students share their completed paragraphs with the class.
  • Ask them to point out the paragraph markers and explain their purpose.

Assessment

  • Observe students as they work to make sure they are using the paragraph markers correctly.
  • Review their written paragraphs to assess their ability to write a paragraph.
