Free 6th Grade Root Words, Prefixes And Suffixes Lesson Plan

Topic: Root words, prefixes and suffixes

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and define root words, prefixes and suffixes.
  • Students will be able to identify the meaning of a given word based on its root word, prefix or suffix.

Materials

  • Word lists that contain root words, prefixes and suffixes
  • Word lists that contain words with their root word, prefix and suffix identified
  • Pencils and paper for students to take notes

Warm-up

  • Begin the class by asking students to think of a word that they are familiar with, and to write it down on a piece of paper.
  • Ask students to share the words they have written down with the class and to brainstorm any words that they think might be related to the word they have given (e.g. if the word is "hike", students might think of words like "walk" or "trek").
  • Once students have shared their words and brainstormed related words, ask them to circle any word that they feel is a root word, prefix or suffix.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to students that root words are the core or basic part of a word, prefixes are words that are added before the root word and change or modify the meaning of the word, and suffixes are words that are added after the root word and also change or modify the meaning of the word.
  • Provide examples of root words, prefixes and suffixes using words that the students have brainstormed.
  • Show students how to identify root words, prefixes, and suffixes by using a handout or worksheet.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs or small groups to identify the root words, prefixes and suffixes in a group of words provided by the teacher.
  • Have students share their answers with the class and explain their reasoning.

Independent Practice

  • Provide students with a list of root words, prefixes and suffixes and have them identify the meanings of each.
  • Provide a blank grid for students to write in the root words, prefixes and suffixes and their meanings.

Closure

  • Review the different types of prefixes, suffixes and root words and their meanings.
  • Ask students to share any interesting or unusual words they learned today.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice to assess their understanding of root words, prefixes and suffixes.
  • Collect and review their lists of words to assess their ability to identify, understand and use them correctly.
  • Use a questionnaire to assess students' understanding of the concepts covered in the lesson.
