Topic: Genre Study

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and define different literary genres and give examples of each.

Materials

• Teacher-provided list of literary genres (e.g. fiction, nonfiction, poetry, etc.)
• Examples of literature from each genre
• Chart paper and markers

Warm-up

• Ask students if they can name any genres of literature that they are familiar with. Write their answers on the board.
• Discuss the importance of genre in literature and how it can help us understand a piece of literature better.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of genre and explain that it is a way of categorizing literature based on its characteristics and themes.
• Use the handout to provide examples of different genres, such as historical fiction, fantasy, and realistic fiction.
• Have students read each example and identify the genre. Have them discuss the characteristics and themes of each genre.

Guided Practice

• Divide the students into small groups and provide each group with a different genre example.
• Have the students read the example and discuss its characteristics and themes.
• Have each group present their discussion to the class.

Independent Practice

• Provide the students with a list of potential genre examples and have them identify the genres of each example.
• Encourage the students to be creative and think outside of the box as they attempt to identify genres for the examples.

Closure

• Have the students share their answers to the genre identification task and discuss the different genres that were identified.
• Review the different genres that were identified and discuss the characteristics of each genre.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their understanding of the different genres and their ability to classify books as a specific genre.
• Collect the students' worksheets and assess their ability to identify and classify different books using a V-chart or a sorting activity.
