Topic:phrases for writing

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to use phrases effectively in their writing by the end of the lesson.

Materials

  • Writing prompts (e.g. "Write a paragraph about a time you went camping")
  • Sentence stems (e.g. "I remember when…" "The best part of camping was…" "The hardest part of camping was…" "If I could go camping again, I would…")
  • Examples of effective phrases in writing (e.g. "The sun was setting over the mountains, painting the sky with brilliant pinks, reds, and oranges." "The air was crisp and clean as we hiked through the woods.")
  • Writing paper and pens/pencils

Warm-up

  • Have students share a personal story or experience they have had.
  • Ask students to think of at least 3 interesting details or details that give a sense of place or setting for their story.
  • Have students share their chosen details with a partner.
  • Have a few students share their partner's details to the class.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of phrases as a way to add detail, emotion, and nuance to writing.
  • Show examples of phrases from the texts provided, and have students identify the phrases and their functions.
  • Explain that phrases are usually formed by combining a verb with some type of noun or adjective.
  • Provide additional examples of different types of phrases and their functions, such as descriptive phrases, emotional phrases, and phrases to avoid.

Guided Practice

  • Provide students with a text and have them identify and underline all the phrases in the text.
  • Have students work in pairs to discuss and identify the functions of the phrases they have underlined.
  • Together, have students create a visual representation of the phrases they have found, including a label for each phrase and a short description of its function.
  • Display the visual representations for review and discussion.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a topic or text of their own to analyze.
  • Have students identify and underline all the phrases in their text.
  • Have students create a visual representation of the phrases they have found, including a label for each phrase and a short description of its function.
  • Have students present their visual representations to the class for review and discussion.

Closure

  • Review the importance of understanding the different functions of phrases in a text.
