Warm-up

  • Begin the lesson by asking students what they know about egypt. Allow them to share any ideas, impressions, or facts they have learned.
  • As a class, brainstorm a list of questions about egyptian history and culture. examples might include: What is the name of the river that flows through egypt? What is the name of the desert region in northern egypt? What is the name of the capital city of egypt?

Direct Instruction

  • Use the map to point out the location of egypt and identify key geographical features, such as the Nile River and the Sahara Desert.
  • Explain that egypt has a long and rich history, dating back thousands of years.
  • Use the textbooks or other resources to provide a brief overview of egyptian history, covering the following topics:
  • The earliest settlers in egypt, known as the predynastic period, who lived in northern egypt beginning around 5000 BC. The predynastic period is divided into three periods: the neolithic period (new stone age), the old kingdom period (early egyptian civilization), and the intermediate period.
  • The pharaohs, the rulers of ancient egypt, who established a centralized government and built great monuments, including the pyramids at giza. The pharaohs are divided into three dynasties: the old kingdom (2686-2055 BC), the middle kingdom (2055-1773 BC), and the new kingdom (1773-1077 BC).
  • The period of decline and foreign domination, beginning with the conquest of egypt by alexander the great in 332 BC and ending with the conquest by the arabic empire in 642 AD.
  • The modern period, beginning in 1882 with the establishment of the egyptian republic. This period includes the reign of farouk, the egyptian revolution of 1952, and the reign of abdel nasser.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the students into small groups and provide each group with a copy of the handout "egyptian History Timeline."
  • Have the students use the timeline to fill in the key events in egyptian history, using the information from the direct instruction.
