Topic: the past simple tense

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to understand the past simple tense and use it correctly in sentences.

Materials

• Pictures of famous works of art
• Pencils and paper for each student

Warm-up

• Ask students if they know what a work of art is.
• Show students a few pictures of famous works of art and ask them to name the artist who painted the picture.
• Review the concept of artistic style and the different genres of art, such as portrait, landscape, abstract, etc.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the past simple tense by explaining that it is used to talk about actions that happened at a specific time in the past.
• Using the picture of the Mona Lisa as an example, ask students to identify the verb in the sentence "Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa."
• Explain that the past simple tense is formed by combining the verb "to be" or "to have" with the past participle.
• Demonstrate how to form the past simple tense by providing examples using the picture of the Mona Lisa.

Guided Practice

• Provide students with a list of verbs in the present tense and have them identify the past simple tense form of each verb.
• Using the same list of verbs, have students work in pairs to complete a sentence strip using the past simple tense.
• Go over the sentence strips as a class and have students explain their reasoning behind their choices.

Independent Practice

• Provide students with a list of verbs in the present tense and have them identify the past simple tense form of each verb.
• Have students work in pairs to create a story using the past simple tense verbs.
• Have students present their stories to the class and explain how they used the past simple tense verbs in their stories.

Closure

• Review the past simple tense and its formation with the class.
• Ask students to share one thing they learned about the past simple tense today.

Assessment:

• Collect and review students' sentences on the board to assess their understanding of the past simple tense.
