6th Grade Talking About Daily Routines Lesson Plan Example (English)

Topic: Talking about daily routines

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to describe a typical day using the present simple tense.

Materials

  • Calendars or clocks
  • Whiteboard and markers

Warm-up

  • Ask students to describe their typical day. Write their responses on the board.
  • Explain that in English, we often use the present simple to talk about routine activities or habits.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the present simple tense, and explain that it is used to describe habitual or repeated actions.
  • Use the phrases and examples from the warm-up to demonstrate how the present simple is used.
  • Emphasize that the present simple can only be used to talk about actions that are happening now or currently. It can't be used to talk about actions in the past or future.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs or small groups to create a chart listing examples of habitual actions in their daily routines using present simple.
  • Have each group present their chart to the class and discuss why each action is habitual and repeated.
  • Extend: Have students write a short paragraph describing their own daily routine using present simple.

Independent Practice

  • For independent practice, have students choose one daily routine activity to focus on and create a short presentation (e.g. poster, Powerpoint) about it. The presentation should include examples of present simple used to talk about the activity and why it is habitual.

Closure

  • Review the key points of the lesson and have students share their presentations with the class.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the lesson and take notes on their understanding of the present simple and how it is used in everyday sentences.
  • Collect and review the presentations and feedback forms for each student to check for understanding and overall comprehension of the material.
