Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

• Copies of the novel "Oliver Twist"
• Handouts with quotes from the novel related to poverty and inequality
• Pencils and paper for students to take notes

Warm-up

• Ask students what they know about the novel "Oliver Twist".
• Write their answers on the board and discuss as a class.
• Ask students if they have any prior knowledge about the themes of poverty and inequality.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of asking and answering questions as a way of understanding a text.
• Discuss the importance of reading closely and making connections between what is read and what is already known.

Guided Practice

• Have students choose a character or a setting from the text and create a venn diagram to show the relationship between that character or setting and another character or setting in the text.
• Have them write a short paragraph explaining the relationship between the characters or settings in the venn diagram.

Closure

• Have students share their venn diagrams and paragraphs with the class.
• Review the objectives of the lesson and have students give examples of how they were able to form questions and answers while reading the text.

Assessment

• Observe students during independent practice and give feedback on their venn diagrams and paragraphs.
• Collect and grade the venn diagrams and paragraphs for completion and ability to form questions and answers.
