6th Grade Earth And Planet Lesson Plan

Topic:Earth and Planet

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to understand basic information about the earth and planet, including their structure, physical and geological features, and climate.

Materials

  • Maps of the earth and planet
  • Information sheets about earth and planet features (e.g. minerals, physical features, geological features, climate)
  • Markers or pens for students to take notes

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have ever heard of the earth and planet before. What do they know about them?
  • Show the students a map of the earth and ask them to locate their country and the other continents.
  • Ask the students to share their knowledge about the earth and planet. What do they know about their structure, physical and geological features, and climate?

Direct Instruction

  • Explain that the earth is a planet that orbits the sun and is the third planet from the sun. It is the largest planet in the solar system and is about 1495900 kilometers (or 93000 miles) in diameter.
  • Explain that the earth has a solid inner core, a liquid outer core, and a solid crust.
  • Show the students pictures of the physical and geological features of the earth, such as mountains, rivers, deserts, etc.
  • Explain that the climate of the earth is determined by its location in relation to the sun, its distance from the sun, its size, and its composition.

Guided Practice

  • Provide the students with pictures of different planets in the solar system and have them identify which planet is the earth.
  • Provide the students with pictures of different types of weather and have them identify which weather conditions are present on the earth.
  • Have the students work in pairs to create a multi-media presentation that compares and contrasts the physical and geological features of the earth to those of another planet in the solar system.
  • As a class, discuss and analyze the presentations.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students choose a physical or geological feature of the earth that they find interesting and research information about it using a computer or other digital resources.
  • Have the students create a poster or presentation to share their findings with the class.

Closure:

  • Review the key concepts learned about earth and planet
  • Ask the students to share their posters or presentations with the class

Assessment:

  • Observe the students during the tutorial and class discussions to assess their understanding of the topic.
  • Collect the students' posters or presentations and review them to assess their ability to apply their knowledge of earth and planet in creating their project.
