Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to define and give examples of determiners in English.

Materials

• Chart paper
• Markers
• Examples of nouns (e.g. cat, house, man, book)
• Examples of determiners (e.g. the, a, an)

Warm-up

• Ask students to give examples of nouns.
• Write their examples on the chart paper.
• Next, ask students to give examples of determiners.
• Write their examples on the chart paper.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that determiners are words that come before nouns and indicate quantity,

specificity, and ownership.

• Ask students to give examples of determiners.
• Write their examples on the chart paper.
• Next, introduce the different types of determiners.
• Hand out the handouts with the different types of determiners and go over them

with the students.

• Have students practice using determiners in sentences.

Guided Practice

• Provide students with a few sentences and have them identify the nouns and

determiners in each sentence.

the sentences.

• Provide students with a passage and have them identify the nouns and determiners in

the passage.

• Have students work in pairs to correct any errors in the use of determiners in

the passage.

• Review the concept of determiners and their function in a sentence.
• Ask students to share one thing they learned about determiners today.

• Observe students during the mini-lecture and guided practice activity to assess their understanding of determiners.
• Collect and review the posters or presentations created during the guided practice activity to assess students' ability to apply their understanding of determiners in creating sentences.
