Topic: Picasso and Guernica art as activism

Objectives & Outcomes

• Understand the historical and cultural significance of Guernica and its relation to the theme of war and peace.
• Express their reflection on war and peace through their mural creation.
• Develop key skills in art and digital media, including creativity, teamwork, and presentation.
• Present their work to the public and be evaluated on the key skills they have developed.

Materials:

• Guernica poster or image
• Art supplies (paints, brushes, etc.)
• Digital media tools (iPads, styluses, etc.)
• Augmented reality app (e.g. Aurafusion AR)

Warm-up

• Have students write down their thoughts and feelings about war and peace.
• Ask students to share their thoughts with small groups.
• Encourage students to listen to each other and share their own ideas and experiences.
• Ask students to share their thoughts as a whole class and compile a list of ideas and feelings.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce Picasso and Guernica as works of art and as testimony to the Spanish Civil War.
• Discuss the historical and cultural significance of Guernica and how it has become a symbol of peace.
• Explain the augmented reality technology and its potential to express students' thoughts and feelings about war and peace.

Guided Practice

• Divide students into small groups and have them brainstorm ideas for their augmented reality content.
• Have students present their ideas to the group and explore different ways of expressing their thoughts and feelings on war and peace.
• Each group should come up with a theme and a few images or texts to represent their theme.
• Provide students with the materials to create their murals (e.g. paint, brushes, cardboard).
• Have students work together to create their murals while providing guidance and support as needed.

Independent Practice

• Have students work independently to finish their murals.

Closure

• As a class, review the key ideas and themes explored in the project, such as Picasso's life and work, the historical and cultural significance of Guernica, and the theme of war and peace.
• Ask students to reflect on what they have learned and how they might apply it to their own lives.

Assessment

• Observe students during the creation of the mural and provide feedback on their application of augmented reality technology and their use of the theme of war and peace in their augmented reality content.
