Topic: Colour Theory, Emotion Colour Guide, Create Paintings Expression with Colour

Objectives & Outcomes

  • To understand the concept of colour theory and its application in painting

Materials

  • Canvas board
  • Painting brushes
  • Colour palette (primary, secondary, tertiary colours)
  • Reference images (e.g. happy, sad, etc.)

Warm Colors

  • Red: Excitement, passion, strength
  • Orange: Vitality, creativity, warmth
  • Yellow: Happiness, optimism, energy

Cool Colors

  • Green: Balance, rejuvenation, nature
  • Blue: Trust, security, serenity
  • Purple: creativity, individuality, luxury

Layout

  • Warm colours on the left, cool colours on the right
  • Place the reference images at the top of the board
  • Start with a base colour and add varying shades to create a gradient
  • Create a horizon line and add contrasting elements to create depth

Directions

  • Introduce colour theory and the different colours
  • Show examples of how the colours can be used in paintings
  • Have students create their own paintings using the colour guide
  • Encourage them to use different shades of the same colour or contrast colours to create mood and emotion

2. Discuss with the class the different emotions related to colour and give examples.

  • Students will use their colour charts and create paintings that express their emotions.

3. Discuss with the class their paintings and evaluate the class work.

4. Encourage the students to be creative and explore their own ways of using colour in their paintings.

5. Have fun!
