Materials

  • Computer with internet access for each student
  • Adobe Photoshop or similar program for editing images (optional)

Warm-up

  • Ask the students if they have ever seen or heard a persuasive advertisement before.
  • Ask them to describe the ad to the class, including the images, the message and the tone.
  • Ask them what makes the ad persuasive and why they think the advertiser chose to use those elements.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of a persuasive advertisement and explain that this is an ad that is intended to convince the reader to buy a product or service.
  • Ask the students to brainstorm a list of possible products or services that they could advertise.
  • Choose a product or service from the list and discuss with the students the elements that are necessary for a persuasive advertisement, including:
  • A clear and concise message: what is the product or service being advertised and why is it worth buying
  • Relevant and convincing evidence: what evidence is there to support the claims made in the advertisement
  • A convincing and engaging tone: how does the advertisement make the reader feel and what kind of attitude does it have
  • Discussing these elements will help the students understand what makes a persuasive advertisement effective and how to use these elements in their own advertisements.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a product or service to advertise.
  • Have the students work together to create a draft of their advertisement, using the elements discussed as a guide.
  • Have the groups present their draft advertisements to the class and have the class provide feedback and suggestions for improvement.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work individually or in small groups to create a final advertisement, using the feedback from the group presentation as a guide.
  • Encourage the students to be creative and use visual elements such as pictures and graphics to enhance their advertisement.

Closure

  • Have each group present their final advertisement to the class.
  • Ask the students to reflect on the process of creating the advertisements and discuss what they learned about creating persuasive advertisements.

Assessment

  • Observe the students as they work individually and in groups to create their advertisements.
  • Evaluate the final advertisements to assess the students' understanding of creating persuasive advertisements and their ability to apply this understanding in the creation of an advertisement.
