Topic: intro to spanish

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to introduce themselves and others in Spanish.

Materials

• Spanish sentences cards with phrases for introductions (e.g. "my name is...", "where are you from?")
• Spanish-language newspapers or magazines for reading practice
• A whiteboard and markers

Warm-up

• Have students sit in a circle.
• Ask students to introduce themselves, saying their name and a quick sentence about themselves (e.g. "my name is Alice, I like to play soccer").
• Once all students have had a chance to introduce themselves, ask them to turn to their neighbor and ask each other questions about themselves (e.g. "where are you from?").

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of Spanish and its importance as a world language.
• Demonstrate how to say "hello" and "goodbye" in Spanish.
• Model how to introduce oneself in Spanish, using the structure "my name is ____, I am from ____."
• Play a game or do a activity that reinforces the vocabulary and structure learned in the warm-up.

Guided Practice

• Divide students into pairs or small groups.
• Give each group a set of flashcards with vocabulary words in Spanish.
• Have the groups work together to match the words to their definitions.
• Have a volunteer from each group demonstrate their work and explain the definitions.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose one of the vocabulary words from the flashcards and research its meaning further on a computer or in a dictionary.
• Have students create a poster or presentation to share their findings with the class.

Closure

• Review the words learned in the lesson.
• Have students share something they learned about Spain or Spanish culture.

Assessment

• Observe and give feedback on students' participation in the class discussions and their ability to speak Spanish during the independent practice activity.
• Collect and review students' written work to assess their understanding of the Spanish words and phrases introduced in the lesson.
