Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

• Laptop or computer with internet access
• List of common online threats (e.g. phishing scams, viruses, hackers)
• Handouts with tips and advice for staying safe online

Warm-up

• Ask the class what they know about online safety.
• Write their responses on the board and discuss as a class.
• Ask the class if they have ever encountered any online threats or dangers.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the topic of online safety and explain that it is important to be aware of risks and dangers when using the internet.
• Discuss the different types of online threats, such as cyberbullying, online grooming, and online scams.
• Emphasize the importance of reporting any online threats or dangers to a trusted adult.

Guided Practice:

• Have students work in pairs to fill out a chart showing examples of online threats and dangers.
• Go over the chart as a class and discuss the different types of threats and dangers listed.

Independent Practice

• Have students create a public service announcement (PSA) about online safety. The PSA should include information about at least two of the types of online threats and dangers discussed in class.
• Students can use technology such as video editing software or PowerPoint to create their PSA.

Closure

• Have students share their PSAs with the class.
• Ask students to reflect on what they have learned about online safety and how they can apply this knowledge to keep themselves safe online.

Assessment

• Observe students during the independent practice and presentation stages to assess their understanding of the topic.
• Evaluate the PSAs for their effectiveness in educating the audience about online safety.
