Topic: EXTERNAL CONFLICT,TYPES,CAUSES AND RESOLUTION

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to define and provide examples of external conflict, explain the causes and resolution of external conflict in stories.

Materials

  • Story or excerpt from a story that includes external conflict
  • Chart paper and markers
  • Examples of external conflict (e.g. storm, car accident, urgent phone call)

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think of a time when they had to deal with an emergency or unexpected event.
  • Have them share their experiences with the class and discuss how they handled the situation.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of external conflict and explain that it is a type of conflict that occurs when two or more opposing forces or characters struggle against each other outside of the main character.
  • Use examples from popular stories to demonstrate the different types of external conflict, including man against nature, man against society, and man against himself.
  • Explain that external conflict can be caused by a variety of factors, including natural disasters, societal restrictions, and personal shortcomings.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and have them brainstorm examples of external conflict from popular stories.
  • Have each group present their examples to the class and discuss the causes of the conflicts they identified.
  • As a class, create a chart on the whiteboard or overhead projector that lists the different types of external conflict, the causes of each type, and examples of each cause from popular stories.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a story they are familiar with (could be a book they have read, a movie they have seen, etc.).
  • Have them identify and analyze the external conflicts in their chosen story, paying attention to the types of external conflict, their causes, and their resolutions.
  • Have students create a presentation (e.g. a presentation using Microsoft Office or Prezi) to share their analysis with the class.

Closure

  • Review the main points of the lesson: what is external conflict, what are the different types, and how do they arise and are resolved.
  • Ask students to share one thing they learned or found interesting during the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the presentation and discussion activities to assess their understanding of the concept of external conflict, the different types, and their causes and resolution.
  • Review and grade the written summaries for accuracy and depth of understanding.
