Topic: Accepting Differences

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to understand the importance of accepting others' differences and how doing so can lead to stronger relationships.

Materials

• Pictures or videos of people who are different in some way (e.g. people with different skin colors, people who use wheelchairs, people who speak a different language)
• Handouts with quotes or phrases about the importance of accepting differences
• Colored pencils or markers

Warm-up

• Have students close their eyes and think of a time when they felt different or were teased for being different.
• Have them share their experiences with a partner.
• Ask them how they felt in that situation and how they would have liked to be treated.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the topic of accepting differences and how important it is to treat others with respect and kindness regardless of their differences.
• Share examples of differences in appearance, ability, and culture.
• Have students brainstorm ways to show acceptance and respect for others.
• Examples might include making eye contact and saying hello, listening without judgment, and treating others the way you want to be treated.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs or small groups to brainstorm additional ways to show acceptance and respect for others.
• Have each group share their ideas with the class and discuss any additional insights.

Independent Practice

• Have students create a poster or presentation to teach their classmates about acceptance and respect. They can include the ideas brainstormed in the guided practice activity and any additional ideas they came up with on their own. Encourage them to be creative and use their own words to explain the concepts.

Closure

• Have students share their posters or presentations with the class. Discuss any new understandings or insights they had about acceptance and respect.

Assessment

• Observe students during the sorting activity and listen to their conversations to assess their understanding of the concepts of acceptance and respect.
• Evaluate the posters or presentations created during the independent practice to assess students' ability to --communicate their understanding of acceptance and respect.
